Patient Summit

Join us for a ground-breaking patient-centric event. The Patient Summit is hosted by SIDM and will help to launch SIDM2022.

This year, the Summit will echo and amplify the SIDM2022 conference theme, The Future of Diagnosis. It will demonstrate how better-quality outcomes can happen when patients are actively involved in the process; for their own medical care team, or as partners in system- or organization-level research, policy, and advocacy.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Modeled after a healthcare “hackathon,” where teams of cross-discipline experts gather to compete to solve a problem, we will tackle the urgent need for innovative solutions to the heart-breaking harm from maternal morbidity and mortality.

The case that will serve as our catalyst for the solutions-generation workshop, is an example of missed and delayed diagnosis of obstetrical and gynecological issues, a commonly occurring and complex body of diagnostic errors.

Experts will briefly share the current landscape of maternal morbidity/mortality due to diagnostic error as well as the key roles that health inequities play.  Then a patient will share their maternal morbidity case history with multiple instances of diagnostic error.

Following the patient's case history, a group of designated experts, with participation from the audience of patients, patient advocates, and healthcare professionals, will break into three teams to identify potential innovative solutions that could have prevented the diagnostic breakdown.  Each team will focus on one arena of diagnostic breakdowns such as cognitive errors, system failures, educational and knowledge gaps, and problematic culture/team dynamics. Using brainstorming and consensus-building tactics, each team will focus their energy on one best solution, which they will then present to the reconvened full summit.

POST-SUMMIT OUTLOOK

The proposed solutions and the interactive, multi-stakeholder process used for developing the solutions, will be captured in a conference proceedings report for use by SIDM and our allies to shift policy, seek funding, and build awareness about the need for improved diagnostic quality.

The concepts developed from the Patient Summit can form the basis for a healthcare organization to apply for a DxQI Seed Grant.  If selected as a grant awardee, the concept will be implemented in that organization over the course of a year.
